This week I was on twitter and I searched for fairy tale memes. I was scrolling throught them and one immediately caught my attention. Usually the memes that catch my eye are extremely funny, but this one caught my attention for a different reason. This meme was a picture of cinderella that read, "If you watch Cinderella backwards, it's about a woman who learns her place.". I found this to be very derogatory towards femalws in our society. This connected to what we discussed in class. Bettelheim's opinion was that the gender of the characters did not matter, but this meme clearly portrays that cinderella being a female is an inferior. The picture is of cinderella in raggedy clothes, and she is on her hands and knees scrubbing the floor. Stone's argument that gender roles in fairy tales do matter is supported by this meme. The female is depicted an as inferior. |
